Early Life

Cyrus the Great was born around 579 BC in the land of Persia which is today known as Iran. His father was Cambyses I, the king of Anshan. According to the Greek historian legend Herodotus, Cyrus was the grandson of the Median King, Astyages. When Cyrus was born, Astyages had a dream that Cyrus would one day overthrow him. He gave his grandson to a general named Harpagus, and ordered him to kill the baby. Harpagus gave Cyrus to one of the king’s shepherds, named Mehrdad and asked him to release him on a king’s order to a mountain in the jungle to become a prey of predators. When shepherd’s wife, Sepako, became aware of the matter, she cried out to her husband to hold him back from killing the baby and to give her dead-born baby in to the jungle instead. His husband accepted the advice of his wife and handed the dead body of his son to Harpagus guards.
