I’ve finally earned enough money to take the bus. I even prepared a little extra, because I’ve heard that sometimes the bus driver asks for more, if you’re coloured. In my 46 years, I’ve never taken the bus before. I always went on foot.
I close and lock the door behind me. I looked at my watch, it’s 7.14 am. I think the bus stop is a half an hour walk from here. It’s still dark. The sun hasn’t risen yet, as it’s really hard to see where I’m headed. The time flies by fast, and before I know it, I’m already there. I waited for 6 minutes before the bus came. I payed for the ticket and looked around. All the white people sat in one section of the bus, and the coloured, in another one. But there was one person who particularly caught my eye. It was a woman. She was around my age, maybe a little older. She was the only one who was sitting in the white section. I went past her and sat down behind her. But as soon as I sat down, there was a man complaining. He didn’t have anywhere to sit and told the woman to get up. The woman didn’t even budge. She looked him dead in the eyes and asked ‘’why should I?’’ at that moment, it felt like everything stopped. The man started getting irritated and yelled after the bus driver. Everyone else was shocked, no one moved, not even the slightest. The bus driver got up and told her to get a move on, or else he would call the cops. The woman looked at him and her gaze changed completely. ‘’Well I guess you’ll have to do that, because I’m not moving.’’ She kept on holding the eye contact and looked very intimidating. The bus driver was filled with rage and told every coloured person to leave. But no one moved. ?
