On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, USA, a brave woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. This was a big deal because at that time, there were unfair laws that made black people give up their seats to white people.
Earlier, I had spoken to Ms. Parks at the bus station. I remember thinking to myself that she was a very intelligent woman. Personally, as a white woman, I have no problem whatsoever with black people, and they can sit wherever they want on the bus, that is none of my business. However back in the day when slavery wasn’t that long time ago, people still saw black people as people they could just treat however they wanted to. That’s why there was a law that decided that black people should always sit in the back of the bus and stand up if there weren’t space for the white people.
I was very close to the event when it happened, in fact I was the person sitting next to Ms. Parks. We were having a nice conversation. The bus was full, but me and Rosa were both a bit older than the other passengers, so of course we chose to keep sitting down. A man ended up coming up to Rosa and demanding for her to stand up so he could sit. Rosa said no, I had never heard that before.
