Aline, who is also the narrator of the story, is a Haitian girl.

She seems very young and I assume she is between eight and twelve. She lives in the town Sayira with her with her father (papa), her mother (Manman) and her little sister (Jojo). She seems very mature and caring of her very young age. For example, in the hotel room where they have stayed for many weeks, she is still thinking about how others are doing and not some childish and selfish stuff as other children maybe would do. “Lying in bed next to my mother and Jojo, wondering how papa is doing, how long he can survive without food and how we can survive without freedom.” (p. 16. L. 34)

Aline grew up in the town Sayira, as I said earlier. Alines family´s house seems like a very old and dilapidated. She says in the story that when it sometimes rains, the water floods their rooms so that they are unable to sleep in their beds. “Sometimes when it rains, our rooms get flooded and we must go inland to escape the waters.”

(P.12, L. 2).

That is the setting at Alines hometown.

Then there is also the setting in the hotel room in Miami. When they arrived at Miami they got arrested and were placed in a little apartment or hotel room where they were unable to go outside. And when Manman gets sick they are not allowed to go see doctor either. In Miami the setting is not very good either. It seems very harsh mentally not knowing what the future brings and not knowing whether or not you are going to live in Miami or you are going back to Haiti.
