The movie “prayers for Bobby” is a heartbreaking movie which brought many different emotions up in me. Through the film I felt sadness, anger and I actually also felt compassion for both Bobby and Mary. I felt so sorry for Bobby that he couldn’t accept himself because it brought him away from his family and what he believed in. He strongly believed that no one loved him, not even his family. And for his mother at the end of the movie mere my mind began to feel so deeply sorry for Mary because I so truly could feel her grief and blame against herself.
I really like how the movie gives words to the topic homosexuality because homosexuality back in the 1980s was looked as deviant to most society and still today there are some individuals who believe it is a perversion and an abomination. The movie, Prayer for Bobby, recaps on how the power of one’s society’s beliefs had an influence on families, especially how it influenced Bobby Griffiths family. It was the fighting, the struggling, the trying to “cure himself” and the feeling of being unloved that brought Bobby to the end of his life. Bobby completed suicide by jumping off a freeway overpass directly into the path of a truck which killed him instantly. Bobby’s mom cared so much about Bobby going to hell and wouldn’t realize that when bobby jumped out of the bridge he was finally free from his hell.
