Dear parents magazine. My name is ….. and I come from Denmark. I have chosen to write an email with my thoughts and opinions on the relationship between adults and teenagers. First of I would like to tell you a bit of how I see the typical relationship between adults and teenagers. A typical relationship is when the adults and the teenager is coming along with each other. If we look at parents and their kids. They most likely live together and are glad around each other. But sometimes they can get mad at each other because the teenager isn’t allowed to do something that he wants. For example. When I’m not allowed to go to a party or go to the club, I can get a bit upset or mad at my parents because my friends are allowed to go, and I want to have fun with them. But that is just how it is with me. In some families the teenager is allowed to do this kind of things. So, I think that If the parents mostly allow the teenagers to do what they want there wouldn’t be as much arguing in the family. The relationship is also different when you’re not a teenager yet because then you don’t want to be out late at night and go to parties so there aren’t as much do discuss about. I know that when I was younger, I didn’t ask my parents if I could go to a party in the weekends because I didn’t want to when I was younger, so we didn’t discuss that kind of things. We only discussed about when it was time to go to bed. But now that I’m older and I want to go to a party we always discuss if I can go or not. And it’s irritating that my parents have to discuss it every time. Because most of my friends can go and that sucks. I think that to make a good relationship between the teenagers and the parents, the parents would need to respect us more and let us be freer. But also, not too free so we don’t go out and do stupid stuff. I also think that we should set our own limits instead of them setting it for us. Because maybe they have experience in drinking and going to parties. But they don’t know our limits, so they can’t use their limit as our limit. So, in the end I think it is the parent’s job to change and let the teenager be freer and let them do more things, so we can set our own limits.
