In a modern and globalized world like today, a lot of people have experienced cultural differences. Now, imagine this is between your boyfriend or girlfriend and your family. Imagine your parents to be thus strict, that they won’t let you have a romantic relationship with someone from another culture. They have even found the man they want you to marry.
When reading "Chameleon", one thing you will notice is the settings. There are two main settings. Both of which are houses, one of them is Rita’s family’s house, and then there’s Rita and Mark’s house. The family home is inspired by the Indian Culture, by the way it looks, its appearance is to separate rooms with beads instead of doors. The family is managed by Rita’s parents and they are very uptight and strict, which we see in this quote: "How many times have I told you not to swear, behta? I sensed his exasperation. Swearing was so unladylike.” Although swearing is not accepted in most places, it’s not something everyone would notice as swearing because it isn’t offending or offensive.
In contrast, Rita and Mark’s house are almost the opposite: it was inspired by Modern British culture. There is no gender-assigned role: "I looked around searching for hints of Mark. Nothing in the kitchen. That surprised me as he did most of the cooking, not like my father." As Rita told us in the story, her mother has almost always been the one cooking, according to today's standards, this is very old school.
