Birth Frida Kahlo was born on the 6th of July 1907. Frida was born in her parents’ house, later called The Blue House or Casa Azul, in Coyoacan in Mexico. Her birth name was Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon. Childhood Frida’s dad was a German descendant and photographer. He immigrated to Mexico, where he met Frida’s mother, Matilde. Matilde was half American and half Spanish. Frida had two older sisters and one younger sister. When Frida was 6 years old, she got a disease called polio, and had to lay in bed for nine months. The disease made her right leg and food become much thinner than her other leg. After that, she started wearing long skirts all the time, so people could not see her leg. Her dad told her to do lots of sports to help her recover. She played soccer, went swimming and did wrestling too, which was very unusual for a girl to do at that time. She and her dad had a very close relationship. Education In 1922, Frida attended a school called National Preparatory School in Mexico City. There were only 35 female students, out of abut 1500 students. She was very popular at the school, because of her honesty and bravery. She met a guy called Diego Rivera, one of her teachers, who she fell in love with. She told her best friend that she was going to marry him one day. Accident At the same year, 1922, Frida joined a gang of students who shared the same political and intellectual views as her. She fell in love with the leader, Alejandro Gomez Arias. On a September afternoon when she traveled with Alejandro on a bus, the tragic accident happened. The bus hit a streetcar and Frida was seriously injured. A steel handrail impaled her through the hip. Her spine and pelvis were fractured. The accident left her in a great deal of pain. She was injured so bad, that she had to stay at
