Most of us love chocolate, and some of us eat it every single day. It’s one of the most popular sweets in the world. I eat it almost daily, and I can never get enough, but who is producing it?
The success of the chocolate has a bad side.
In West Africa, there are children in the age of 7 years old, who work up to eight hours every day. Most of them have never been in school and can’t even read or write. Instead, they are a slave of chocolate, we are eating every day.
A Danish journalist named Miki Mistrati, investigated the use of child labor and trafficked children in chocolate production. They flew all the way to Mali in Africa, to find the children of the cocoa plantations. They work under very bad condition, so bad that you can’t call it child work, but child labor.
A lot of the children work to get money, but most of them don’t even get the payment they should. Some parents even send their children away to work instead of school, and some parents threaten with nothing to eat if they don’t work. Sometimes parents got paid from traffickers for their child, to move them on to cocoa bean farms. They can be bought for only 20 dollars.
