My first thought standing here was: “Wow this podium is small for a big guy like myself”. I am very happy to attend the debate competition here at Oxford despite the small podium. The first point is, I want to thank you for joining me tonight at such a great event at Oxford schools regional debate competition, thank you.
Tonight, I will open your eyes to a very serious and overlocked topic here in the UK and the topic is poverty. This presentation will be about my perspective on poverty here in the UK. If I said that 14 million - a fifth of the UK population - naturally lives in poverty, and needs help to provide food for their family's and get heat in the house? Would you believe me? Many families live without getting enough food every day and don't have the money to give their children a daily food routine.
The number of people in poverty, and that is including families with children going hungry to bed, is rising at a high rate, and the welfare support is reduced year after year.
