Emily and I are walking down the street in London. We arrived at our hotel late last night, so this is our first time really exploring the city. The buildings and decorations around the town are so cozy and nice. As we keep strolling around, the streets get more crowded. They are all yelling and waving with both homemade and storebought signs. We decide to stop and observe what happens next. People seem to be goal-oriented and very passionate about this demonstration. It’s a unique atmosphere. A young woman stands beside us. Her sign says Men of quality respect women’s equality. If we have to guess, we will say that this is a demonstration of equality. The woman next to us asks where we’re from cause we sound foreign. We quickly change subject to the demonstration and why she’s here. “I’m really tired of how unequal the world is. We, women, are being treated like trash all the time, and I’m so sick of it. My co-worker and I have the same job in the company, and he earns 8 percent more than I do. I’m here today, to illuminate the problem. I want to be heard and make society equal.” Both Emily and I couldn’t agree more, that women need better conditions in the work-related field and in our community. We quickly decided to join our new friend Melissa, and together we moved further into the now even bigger crowd. For hours we’ve been standing here expressing our opinions. Neither of us has ever tried to participate in such a big and powerful demonstration before, so it’s a great experience. The time is flying, and if we want to experience other parts of London today, we probably have to get going. Melissa hugs us goodbye and tells us that if we need a tour guide some other day, we can always text her, and well figure something out. Emily is giving me the impression that it’s bin a successful day, and I think so too. We gently jostle through the human crowd trying to get past all of the demonstrators. As we go the yelling and noise disappear. The original plan to explore London starts now.
