The United States is currently facing a crisis. The amount of students who leave high school, without an exam, have rapidly increased. Those students are more likely to “face extremely bleak economic and social prospects.” (ll. 2-3), than students who finish high school. The cause of this, can be traced back to the problem with poverty. For example, “In 2009, poor students were five times more likely to drop out of high school than high-income students.” (ll. 8-9). The reason why poverty has an affect upon the dropout crisis, is because poverty affects the three most significant areas, affecting the development of a healthy child, that is “families, schools and communities.” (ll. 7)

If you are poor, you do not have the money to financial provide your child a good school in a good community. That leads to having more difficulties in high school, because you were not in a good school, when you were younger, and thereby did not learn the proper things, you should have learned in middle school. For example, 39% of Latin-Americans live in poverty, 86% of all 8th graders Latin-Americans, fail to score proficient in math, and 83% 4th graders Latin-Americans fail to score proficient in reading. The amount of Latin-Americans, who live in poverty clearly, has an effect upon, how well they do, in common subjects like math and reading.
