Since the late 18th century, almost every civilian has had the right to own a firearm. Since the beginning of all the mass shootings and school shootings, gun laws have been a major Democratic priority, and this year’s presidential election is no exception. In the US today there are about 393 million firearms owned by civilians and about 40% of the households in the country have at least one gun.

In 2013 48% of Americans stated that gun laws should be stricter, 16% said they should be made less strict and 29% said there should be no change.

In 2000 Bill Clinton announced a partnership between the US government and Smith & Wesson, who produce handguns. They partnered up to make smartguns. A smartgun is a gun which you can only fire from its owners’ hand. The idea behind this was to prevent gun violence by criminals with stolen firearms. Still today there haven’t been any sales of smartguns on the US market. Once a gun store announce that they have smart guns in stock, the NRA and other Second Amendment supporters tries their best to shut them down.

Both the civilians of the US and the US Congress are very divided on where they stand in relation to gun laws.
