Analytical essay/non-ficion: Can virtual reality take over from real life?
In this task, I will make an analytical essay of the article “Can virtual reality take over from real life?”. I will write about the main points in Roger Scruton´s article. I will also include the author´s attitude toward the main topic of the article, and comment on how It is revealed. To end up with I will conclude on the text and the topic in general.
The big question that Roger Scruton is writing about is If virtual reality can take over from real life. One of the reasons why it can take over is that many people will not meet in real life, and would rather write together on the phone/computer. This is caused by the anxiety there is by meeting in real life. If they meet face to face they can risk themselves, and some people will experience self-sacrifice, accountability, the risk of embarrassment, and anger. Even though the reward of having a friend in real life is great, many people choose to have a virtual friend. When having a real friend, you have help in times of need and joy in times of celebration. It is much easier if a person is shy, now they can go boldly into the virtual world and find friends. They don’t have to show up in real life and talk face to face, they can just look at their screen and write to them. If they don’t want to have a friend anymore, they can just turn the phone off. They are glued to the screen, and not the person behind it. It seems like Roger Scruton understands the people who get friends from the virtual world, in the way he writes the article. But he also says that we are naive if we think that people can live their life’s this way, with their eyes on the screen and minds on themselves without affecting their capacity for real human relations.
