Analyse af reality-tv showet 'Boys and Girls Alone'

In the text “Letters to the Editor” we are given answers to the show called “Boys and Girls Alone” by Head of Factual Entertainment, Andrew Mackenzie.

According to him, as a responsible broadcaster, he regards children’s welfare as his first priority. He’s saying that the program is a good way on how to make children make their own decisions about their lives in a safe environment. He can assure that all the children were carefully chosen and screened by experts. Throughout the whole stage parents and their children had the access to expert advice and support. The children lived under good circumstances and protected environment. Trained child chaperones were present throughout the whole program to insure no fighting or disarm between the children. Mackenzie is actually saying that the program was a great experience and the parents’ response has been very positive.

Now if we see the program through Dr Richard House eyes, we can see a huge difference between his and Andrew Mackenzie’s response to the program. Dr House is saying that the program is child cruelty and has no place in research or TV in that matter. In the previous letter from Andrew Mackenzie we heard that the children were guided throughout the whole program by experts etc. That’s not enough according to Dr House because no matter how “expert” they might be it’s impossible to ensure the safety of any environment. Shortly he’s just saying the program is no more than a grotesque social experiment conducted on child guinea-pigs.
