Rebecca and the Neighbours

“Look, Miss” the young policeman said, placing his helmet back on his head. “We have far more important crimes to look into: murders, rapes, burglary. We can’t go round chasing after dogs and noisy neighbours”.
“So, wait until we get murdered and then call you? Is that it?” Rebecca sneered.
The constant taunting and threats of violence were wearying. Savitri got bad results at school and it made Rebecca feel somehow ashamed of being different. She wished she were white. She knew it was wrong and she felt guilty at having such bad thoughts. Her usual friends at school were less friendly towards her, possibly because Rebecca was not so much fun to be with any more but more likely because the Wrights had a strange influence over the rest of the Estate. It was as if they brought out the worst in everyone. They were evil and made everyone think evil. British Nationalist Party stickers appeared on everyone’s doors, leaflets were handed out after school by ugly young booted men who spat at the black children. Rebecca had never seen so much hatred in her time at Garden Estate.
