The extraction from the novel American Psycho, takes place in a zoo where the main character Patrick Bateman is almost too casually looking around and perceiving all of the peoples movement, analyzing everything that goes on around him.
Patrick Bateman is eating lunch at Alex goes to Camp, presumably a cafë or a restaurant. When he is done he seems to have a problem finding a destination to walk to, so mindlessly he goes to the zoo. Patrick describes the scenery as still being able to see the skyscrapers and apartments on Fifth avenue. He then goes of to looking at all these people and describe them without hesitating about whats right or wrong to say. He then spots a child at a crowd gathering and resumes to stare at him. The child stares back. Patrick starts a conversation with the child saying “Would you like - a cookie?”. But before the child can say anything Patrick pulls out his knife and stabs the child in the neck. Leaving him behind some trash cans. The child's mother notices the absence of her child and rushes to start scanning the area in hopes of finding her son. She eventually finds her son behind the trash cans and finds him stabbed. Patrick tries to act as a doctor, rushing to the child and faking first aid. The child dies and Patrick has escaped back onto Fifth avenue with minimal staining on his jacket.
