buying and selling people as 'property' - was an institution in the British colonies in North America from the beginning of the 17th century and was continued in a number of states in the independent United States of America. The slaves were imported from the African continent. During the 18th century, several northern states abolished the institution, while the southern states expanded slavery, which played a central role in e.g. cotton production. The economies of the northern states, on the other hand, were based on manufacturing and wage labor. The economic contradictions led to the American Civil War in 1861, and when the war in 1865 fell out in favor of the North, slavery was abolished at the federal level.
the prohibition against slavery:
the prohibition was when the American government and the British in 1807 agreed on forbidding the slavetrading , which meant, that it was no longer allowed to bring new slaves over the Atlantic, but that the current generations still were forged to work on the plantations. The next generation though would be free people.
