On the 23rd of September 2019, Greta Thunberg delivered a largely viewed speech at the U.N. Climate Action Summit in New York, where the leaders of the 193 countries that are a part of the U.N, were gathered. The purpose of the meeting is to help countries limit their climate change and to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Greta talked about the climate changes, and what needs to be done to change our climate for the better, she spoke directly to the people capable of changing it.
We have chosen theThis essay examines the following problem statement “This essay examines the problem statement that addresses whether or not Greta Thunberg has the rhetorical means to reach the U.N leaders.“
At the time the speech was held, Greta was only 16 years old. She is a climate activist from Sweden, who has gained a lot of popularity and attention for her activism on climate change. She first got media attention in 2018 when she held her own strike for the climate, at the Swedish Parliament for several weeks. This speech was very powerful, and she used all the right public speaking tools. She has made her message so clear and so impactful. Greta might not look or act like a person with authority, but she doesn’t necessarily need that for her speech to have an impact. She’s the embodiment and an ambassador of a generation of young people wanting change and action to help the climate. Greta makes use of pathos when speaking and it’s very clear both when reading the speech and seeing it, that her words are filled with emotion and passion. “This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean.” (p1. l. 16), and another example (p1. l. 19) “You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.”
