The bell jar is a novel written by Sylvia Path back in 1963. It is a story about a girl who seems to be dealing with a lot. She can not seem to find any meaning to what others or herself are doing, such as sleeping, showering or washing your clothe, because everything that you do, you just have to do again the next day, and the day after that. The girl then comes to see Doctor Gordon, a psychiatrist but he is just a stuck-up pretty boy. And instead of talking about her and her problems, he finds a way of turning the conversation to be about him and then send her home with nothing but a bill.
Analysis
The main theme of this analysis is mental health. And how, for example, it effects the main character, and the ones around her. How both it can make the people around you feel the same or how some people will take advantage of you.
Our main character is a girl who almost seems to have lost all her zest for life. Everyday chores or basic human needs is redundant to her. “as I hadn’t washed them in my three weeks at home. The sweaty cotton gave off a sour but friendly smell. I hadn’t washed my hair for three weeks, either. I hadn’t slept for seven nights.” (l. 13-16 p. 1). The reason why she has not done these things is that she feels that it is just so meaningless. Why bother, we all have to do it the next day again, the exact same thing. A thought process like that can be very destructive and is in no way helping her to getting out of her current state of mind. It is a kind of vicious circle, because the longer she has a thought process like that, the less happy she will be and etc.
