Every Child make new different experiences every day. This is how most of the children do their development from innocence to experienced. In the short story “Superman and Paula Brown’s New Snowsuit” from Sylvia Plath, which is written in 1955 the author tells her significant development story. 13 years after it really happened. The time WWII began.
The author tells about her development from a world full of imagination and Superman to a real world, the world of adulthood, lies and cheesiness. The title “Superman and Paula Brown’s New Snowsuit”, is a very well-chosen title. It is like a super short resume of the short story. Superman is a synonym for her childhood and Paula Brown’s new snowsuit for her adulthood.
Superman is a symbol for justice, truth and peace. He comes from another planet that means from a private world and he did not do something bad on Earth, so he is innocent. All these qualities can be transferred to the main character in the story (not 100% transferred).
“Paula Browns New Snowsuit is different. Paula Brown got for her birthday great many things, but her preferred present which she showed them, was a powder blue snowsuit from Sweden. As the birthday party goes on, they watched a shocking movie about Japanese prisoners, who were tortured by having no food or water. The snowsuit symbolizes the materialistic way we behave. A day later they played outside, during this Paula Brown fell accidently in an oil-slick. All the children blamed the main character for pushing her, but the story says she did not push her. Blaming the main character for pushing Paula, knowing she has not done this, tells us, that the world is full of lies and cheesiness. The main character tries to defend herself, so she has her own “war” against the group of Children.
