The story “Pill Pusher” written by Carolyn Drake in 2016 begins as an irritated and tired employee at a pharmacy, instructs a costumer to wait in line as the other costumers do. The customer who is a lady, seems stubborn with an attitude. The narrator is picking up every act the lady does and observe how she behaves and forge an inner hatred towards the lady. Through the scenes the narrator also thinks about how she is disappointed that she ended up working at a retail and selling addictive medicine even though she got a pharmacy degree.
As it becomes the lady’s turn in line, the employee hand her the prescription for her daughter but the lady does not want the medicine in pills but as a liquid. The two then exchange roars of frustration. It ends with the narrator handing over the right prescription after she have read on the computer what her daughter suffers from. The narrator then found a little compassion.
We have all tried to become stressed or annoyed by something at work or school, as in “Pill Pusher” the narrator gets so stressed, she forgets why she Is working at a pharmacy. Luckily, the scene at the end reminded her why she is working there. It is important to be satisfied at your job when you are working week in week out. That is also what I think she realizes at the end. We see multiple signs in “Pill Pusher” that shows us why she possibly is not satisfied at her job. And I will try to list some of them further in my analysis.
