“Pill Pusher” is a short story written by Carolyn A. Drake in 2016. It is about a female pharmacist, who does not like her job and regrets her education because of a huge student debt. She argues with an annoyed customer, who does not want to wait in line for the medication to her daughter. The daughter cannot swallow the pills, that is given but the pharmacist cannot give liquid medicine without consulting a doctor. The customer is even more impatient and annoyed and therefore the pharmacist thinks poorly of the woman, however, she might be wrong in her accusation. When it is the customers turn, the pharmacist discovers that the woman’s daughter is sick of leukemia and immediately regrets being so mean to the mother. The pharmacist apologizes and puts on a fake smile for the next customer in line.

Analytical essay:

This essay will mainly account for the main character of the short story, called “Pill Pusher”, partly by inquiring into the main character’s inner and outer characteristics. The focus will be the point of view in the story, and the essay will analyze the composition and style and furthermore focus on the main theme.

The story is told from a first person with limited point of view; “My tired lips no longer capable of mimicking a faux-friendly customer service smile” (ll. 2-3). The narrator is the main character, where the reader only sees the story from her point of view. The fact that we only know the main character’s thoughts and feelings makes the reader identify themselves and associate with her.
