Around the afternoon in a Walgreens pharmacy stands a two year out of school pharmacist. It is the girl’s job to check prescriptions and hand out the corresponding drugs. Standing in her own thoughts helping customers, she gets shocked when a woman suddenly burst out yelling at her, claiming that she is being forgotten after she has been standing there for a long time. The tired-out girl repeatably tells the lady that she has not been standing in the line and therefore they did not know that she had not been helped. After going back and forth the girl realizes, by checking the woman’s daughters previous medicine, that she is not just some angry lady, but that she is stressed out because her daughter has cancer.

Essay:

The American author Carolyn A. Drake published in 2016 a short story called “Pill pusher”

The short story is in present tense, from the point of view of a tired narrator who is working her shift in a pharmacy. Our main character is most likely a female as it is described that several of her male customers have tried to flirt with her whilst she has been working. An example of this is ”I’ll bet ten to one he offers to get me a cup of coffee while he waits, because he’s just such a nice guy”(ll.20-21).
