In English class we’ve been working with the topic “growing up” and related to that, the movie “Billy Eliot”. The movie is about a boy from a poor family. His mom has passed, and his brother and dad are mine workers on strike. Billy does boxing but he’s no good at it. One day he sees the ballet team practice and he leave the boxing team to do ballet. It turns out he is really talented and soon Billy will be auditioning for a ballet school. The movie takes place in England in 1984 during the miners’ strike. The movie shows what the gender stereotypes used to be like.
Billy is an 11-year-old boy from a mining family. He is a very sweet and emotion filled boy. He has a hard time fitting in, and he challenges the social norms by dancing. Billy loves ballet so much that he keeps dancing even though his dad, Jackie, makes it very clear that he is not allowed to. At his dance audition he explains to the teachers that the dancing feels like electricity in his body. Billy’s mom has passed away and even though Billy is trying to hide his feelings its clear that he misses her, especially when his dad doesn’t accept his dancing. Growing up in a family of mine workers you would typically show off how manly you are but in stead Billy goes his own way and gets in touch with his feminine side and starts dancing. However, Billy makes it very clear that just because he likes dancing doesn’t make him gay.
