Billy ElliotKathrine, 8.D.April 2010.1. My character is Jackie Elliot. Jackie Elliot has two children – Tony (the oldest) and Billy (the youngest). Jackie lives in a small townhouse in Northern Ireland, with his two sons and his mother (or mother in law?). The family is very poor, because Tony and Jackie were on strike, from the mine for a very long time.Jackie’s wife has passed away, and Jackie seems very sad and mad much of the time. Jackie used to be a boxer, when he was a child, and he wants his sons to be the same. When Billy rather wants to do ballet, Jackie tries to stop him for Billy’s own best, because he is afraid that Billy might be gay, or that he will be bullied. But when Jackie sees that Billy is not going to stop, he supports him. Jackie is in the end a good father, and he does his best.2. I think the film is going on in the late 70’s, beginning of the 80’s, because of the furniture, wallpaper, black-and-white-TV (which still was common in the 70’s), cars and colours, and persons as; Wayne Sleep (born 1948), Fred Astaire (1899-1987), Daley Thompson (born 1958) and Margaret Thatcher (Prime minister, born 1925) are mentioned. Also because of the mine strikers, of course. 4. The first scene I have chosen is the scene where Billy brings personal things as inspiration for the audition dance. Especially the part where Billy reads the letter from his mom out loud for Ms Wilkinson, that he wasn’t supposed to read before he was 18. Billy knows exactly what it says, word by word, and I think it shows that Billy misses his mother a lot. The second scene is where Jackie is ruining the piano. He is mad, because Billy keeps doing ballet, and plays piano, and it reminds him of his dead wife, that he is missing so badly. Therefore he ruins the piano, and uses it for firewood. In a (violent) way it shows that Jackie does have feelings, and that he also is affected by the mothers dead. The last scene I have chosen is where Tony and Jackie come to London, to see Billy dance. Tony gets to sit next to Michael, Billy’s best friend, who now is gay. I think it is a very important scene in the film, because you get to see, what have happened to Billy after he got to the royal ballet school and to Michael, after they grew up.
