Jackie is a widower, who lives with his two sons and their grandma. He works as a miner along with his oldest son Tony. But because of the political situation at the time, Tony and Jackie are on a strike and the family therefore doesn’t have much money. Since his wife died many downtrodden feelings have been hidden, he is a man showing few emotions and he wants to stand strong in front of his sons, because he thinks it is better not talking about the loss of her, and maybe because he is scared of the feelings involved. He has a lot of pride and when he discovers that Billy is taking ballet lessons instead of boxing, he is afraid that he will seem weak if his son does something like that and will appear as a poof.
The way he reacts, is his way to show that he loves his sons and he only wants the best for them. But his lack of will to show his grief from their loss, and unwillingness to talk about it, only pulls the family further apart. But when he realizes what is best for the boys, especially Billy, and lets go of his fear to seem weak, his attempts to keep the family together succeeds.
