The movie is about Billy: Billy's mother has died recently and he lives alone with his father Jackie and big brother Tony. They are both in the big strikes that follow the crisis in coal mining town of Durham in England in 1984. In his leisure suits Billy's grandmother, goes after the family's desire for boxing. The hard sport appeals not Billy, and instead he discovers something that takes place in the hall next too. Billy encouraged by his teacher Mrs.. Wilkinson, and continues her ballet training in secret. He can not keep it a secret anymore, as he will be able to get to the audition at the best of all ballet schools, the Royal Ballet School.

So in the start his father gets very angry and said to Billy he should stop dancing. But in the end the father accept it, and begin working again. So he can pay the ballet school.

So the story ends very well.

billy: a quiet boy, it does not seem like he is doing well at home, they do not talk together as a family, but when he dancing he can feel free.

Jackie: an angry old man. angry all the time, will initially only have his boy to boxing because he did as a kid. he gets very angry when he finds out billy goes to ballet and in the beginning he will not accept it but eventually he will have to accept it because Billy wants to dance, no matter what his father says, so eventually it all becomes really good again, the father is happy and starts to work again to get Billy into ballet school.
