While getting huge success and criticism Bret Easton Ellis published “On the Beach” in 1994, one of the many short stories in his collection “The Informers”. Set in California during the early 1980s, the author illustrates how the characters behave in an environment where drugs were casually accepted and where society was obsessed with appearance.
The setting of the story plays an important role in affecting the main character’s attitudes towards others. On the beach in Malibu when Cars and Madonna tapes were still being played, drugs, clothes, fancy clubs, and drinks are described to give a visual cue into the setting of affluence where people were materialistic and more self centred.
From the beginning of the story the indifference of the narrator is shown while describing his a previous hangover night in a party where he only can remember drinks, girls, and music. In fact, while his girlfriend is dying he only can think of her physical appearance that it is not pleasant to him anymore. B calling her body “like shit”, he appears like a shallow person with a carefree attitude of the life of his partner. Whlie sleeping with his friend, arguing about food, and being angry for a bottle of beer deprive him from morality and decency.
