Death is still an unknown experience for the living ones, but a thing you are forced to deal with from the moment you are born.Somebody gets older than expected, but others pass away way too early. The early exit could be because of a deadly disease.A disease can destroy your happiness slowly and painfully. In the short story, “On The Beach” by Bret Easton Ellis, the main character’s girlfriend suffers from a deadly disease that affects her happiness and age of death.

What arguments can prove the disease she suffers from and why. How is she and what family does she have. What is the narrator trying to tell us through the symbolizations?

The short story takes place between 1980-1990 in the southern California, in Malibu and Santa Monica.

Once she was a tall, fit, attractive and blond girl, but as her illness got worse, she lost her hair, which could indicate that she was the diagnosed with cancer.

She is at the beach tanning a whole day, but without getting any colour, the fact that she is not getting any colour at all, shows that her skin cells are not functioning which also supports the claim that she suffers from cancer. The sick girl is a very calm, sad and quiet character, since she doesn’t speak and relaxes during the whole story because she lost all muscles and energy in line with her disease.
