The short story takes place between 1980-1990 in the southern California, in Malibu and Santa Monica.
Once she was a tall, fit, attractive and blond girl, but as her illness got worse, she lost her hair, which could indicate that she was the diagnosed with cancer.
She is at the beach tanning a whole day, but without getting any colour, the fact that she is not getting any colour at all, shows that her skin cells are not functioning which also supports the claim that she suffers from cancer.The sick girl is a very calm, sad and quiet character, since she doesn’t speak and relaxes during the whole story because she lost all muscles and energy in line with her disease.
