The story is told in a third person narrator, the narrator seems to be omniscient but it especially focuses on what aura thinks and does it can be seen here The narrator knows what Gus, Aura and Oz do but as the story it proceed it seems like the narrator is more of a limited omniscient narrator as the story is bound to Aura especially, it can be seen here “Aura ignored the food and lay in her bed alone, her tears so hot they seared the skin of her temples as they fell” and here “She felt the bitter ball rise into her throat again”. We are told that Aura is angry with Oz, but we aren’t told what Oz and Gus thinks of the situation directly from what the narrator tells us.
The story is set in an exotic Ish location, we aren’t told were but we are told that it takes place on a island both in the text and by the title. by the description, it could be Australia or new Zeeland. We are told that they are at a summerhouse from May to June/July, the house seems to be a big two-story house with a private beach and a pool. The neighboring house where Oz lives is described as such “he went only to the house next door, a giant gray thing with turrets” this says something about the area which indicates at it is a quite rich neighborhood. The landscape is described as very idyllic with flowers everywhere for example” the hydrangeas clenched their fists, wary of blooming” and the pink flowers were all gone, and now the world was filled with aggressive yellow, tiger lilies and daisies and sunflowers.”. when they are at the beach, we are told that the ocean is “a strange dark blue” and there are cliffs and caves following the beach. Descriptions such as “In Aura’s cave, the stone was cold and smooth and it was chillier here, though out of the wind. There were seashells heaped in a corner, a pulsing black to her back.” Also indicates in a way how Aura feels on the inside but explained by the landscape.
