It is a third-person narration. The narrator is outside the plot and uses the main character’s point of view to convey the events. It is set in the mid-1980s in London, and we follow a teenage girl named Clara who undresses at school, influenced by her mother’s disinterest in her. The physical setting includes Clara’s school, the city and Clara’s home. The school is described in detail in the beginning of the story as Clara take her clothes off in the assembly hall and walks from the lobby to the form room naked “The entrance lobby was empty. The floor was highly polished, and she could see her own reflection, a foreshortened pink blur. There was a bright modern painting on one wall and several comfortable chairs for waiting people, arranged around an enormous rubber plant and ashtrays on chrome stalks. She walked along the corridor to her form room, which was also quite empty, with thick gold bars of sunlight falling on the desks”

Characterization of Clara

The girl of the story named Clara Tilling. She is 15 and a half years old. Clara’s parents are separated, and Clara lives with her mother. She goes to school in a girl school in London. When Clara was a little girl, she seemed shy to other people. She did not like to show off and stuck to herself. In the text she says, “I don't really feel anything," which was, in a way, truthful”, that is maybe a sign of loneliness or depression. And again, a bit later she is standing at the bus station just to hang out, and then take home later, just to be sociable.
