The American dream… it is something we all have in us. Something we all want. Something we all need.
The phrase “American Dream” was officially invented for just 90 year ago in a book called ‘The Epic of America’ by author James Truslow Adams. He argues that is was “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each of us according to ability or achievement”.
During the 30’s the ideal American Dream included three criterions. Two children, a marriage and a three-bedroom house the infamous white picket fence. Many Americans were going though tough times and looked up the American dream as a goal to achieve for. A goal thy needed to achieve to have success.
A decade later in the 40’s it was all about establishing stability after some tough decades. It was about rebuilding the nation after World War I and II. It was a dream that included a house in the suburbs, having a steady job and a solid family unit. Until Roosevelt’s 1934 Housing Act, it was for many out of reach to own a house. Even those in the middle class rented. But it was possible now. For them it was a dream coming true. The standard of living started to rise.
