Back in 2016, Donald Trump won the political decision with 304 constituent votes, while his rival, Hilary Clinton just had 227. In January 2017, it was the time for the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, to pass the baton to Trump.
After taking the oath of office, it is time for the inauguration address; America First. In the following paragraphs I will do an analysis of the speech with emphasis on discourse analysis and language to find out if Donald Trump succeeds in communicating his message.
The text’s speaker is the former businessman, elected president, Trump, who at the time was somewhat new in the political world. The circumstances of the speech are that it was held on inauguration day in 2017 on the January 20 in Washington D.C. at the US Capitol Building. The speech was the first public appearance as the official President of the United States. The subject of the speech is the future of America with Trump as the President. He mentions different topics, that he for the next four years had planned to focus on. Finally, the audience is America. He talks directly to the citizens but more the financially burdened families than the wealthy people of D.C. He is talking to the ones standing physically in front of him as well as those watching the ceremony in the comfort of their own homes. Looking at the three modes of persuasion ethos and pathos are the dominant ones. In the speech, Trump talks about jobs, wealth and poverty. Due to the fact that he is a somewhat successful businessman, it can be believed, that he would know a lot within this area. His expertise adds to his credibility and makes him more believable as the speaker. In the same way, his use of pathos boosts his credibility and ability to get a message across. Talking from a nationalistic perspective, Trump wants the citizens to feel a sense of American pride. These emotions can be expressed through the use of words mentioned in the discourse paragraph below.
