Lucy is a young girl. My guess is that she is around 13-14 years old. She is a girl who don’t let herself be influenced by others opinions. Her mother says that Bethan is common and that Bethan’s mom swears. But Lucy is still friends with Bethan. Her mother also tells Lucy that if she smokes, her arteries will fur up and she will have a heart attack but Lucy still smokes. She doesn’t care what her mother says. I think she wants to challenge herself, make her own decisions, break some limits and other things that many teens want. Another example is on page 35, line 42 – page 36, line 3, it says “My mom doesn’t let me wear make-up, so I have to scrub at my face before getting home but after Bethan has said goodbye and walked on to her house so that she doesn’t tease me for being square”.
If I should analyze Lucy out from this setting, I would say that she doesn’t really listen to her mother, but she still doesn’t want her mother to find out about it. Contemporary she cares about what Bethan think. I think that Bethan is some kind of role model too Lucy. But before Lucy became friends with Bethan, she was different. She was a good girl who made her homework and went well with school. She was also gut friends with a girl named Penny.
