First of all, I thought that it would be a great opportunity to talk about climate change by choosing to also talk about the ocean. I have always been very interested in the ocean in general, since I was a little child, so because of that, I have chosen to talk about the great barrier reef.

2. facts about the reef

Size (344.400 square kilometers)

The great barrier reef is the biggest coral reef in the world and is just about 344.400 square kilometers in size.

Location (Queensland)

The reef is located on the coast of Queensland, in the northeastern part of Australia

UNESCO’s world heritage list

Extinct by 2050

After years of research and study, scientists have discovered that the reef is very endangered and is believed to be extinct by 2050. Because of that the reef was in the 1980’s put on UNESCO’s world heritage list

3. influence on the world

Corals (oxygen and carbon dioxide)

We all know that trees produce a lot of the oxygen that we as human being’s inhales, but in fact the ocean also produces a ton of the oxygen in our atmosphere, actually around 50 to 80 percent. To continuing produce this much oxygen, the ocean needs to stay healthy, and in order for that to happen, the corals need to be healthy.
