Australia is one of the world’s seven continents. It is a huge Island, almost as big as the United States without Alaska. There lives around 21.5 million residents. The biggest city is Sydney where there lives almost 3.5 million people, but it’s not the capital, that’s Canberra. In Canberra lives around 270.00 people. Australia’s official language is English, but the accent is different from the British one. Many of the first English-speaking people who came to Australia were from London, others from Ireland and Scotland and they didn’t exactly speak “the Queen’s English”. You can hear that in the Australian accent today. Nowadays the accent sounds more and more like the American English. A very long time ago, the distance between Asia and Australia wasn’t as big as it is now. The Aboriginals crossed from Asia to Australia for 40.000 years ago. Their traditional way of living was by hunting and fishing and also by gathering fruits, seeds, insects and roots to eat. The Aboriginals moved from place to place in order to find their food. This meant that they didn’t build permanent houses but lived in shelters*. Australia has the world’s longest underwater coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef. It’s over 2.000 km long. Australia was almost unknown until 1770, when the explorer Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay, on the south-east coast, and claimed* the land for Britain. The only people living there, where the Aborigines, who had arrived on the continent about 30.000 years before. Australia is one of the world’s richest lands, with great *wealth in minerals and farmland. The country exports large quantities of *wool, meat and wheat.
