In this essay I am going to going to be analyzing the fourth short film featured in the movie: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, All Gold Canyon. The short film is full of beautiful cinematography. It also touches upon the theme of the unfairness of life, and how you much sympathy you can gain from a certain perspective.
Analysis
We start off by hearing the protagonist singing an old Irish American song called Mother Machree. The song is about a tribute to mothers. The protagonist is a dirty old gold digger, with a horse named lucky. This could be because of his profession. He calls the pocket of gold that he is looking for Mr. Pocket, which makes it a bit cartoonish, almost. Throughout the film, it seems like he has a great deal of experience. He likes to talk to himself, which adds a lot to the film. We get an insight to what he is thinking. When filmmakers want the viewer to know what at character is thinking, they often use a voiceover, which is often lazily done. By both making the character talk to himself and making him seem like the type of person to talk to himself, it shows a lot more skill and creativity. In the scene where he climbs up a tree and finds a bird’s nest, it really shows what type of a person he is. He sees 4 eggs. He starts by taking all of the eggs, but then he sees and owl sitting on a branch in front of him. He puts all of the eggs back, except one. He definitely has morals, but he can bend them to his liking. He has no reason to be moral, being in the situation that he is in, and ye he still manages to.
