Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico on July 6, 1907. She grew up in the family home, later referred to as the Casa Azul.

At the age of 6, Frida contracted polio. This damaged her right leg and foot. After she recovered, she began wearing long skirts to cover her injuries.

By 1922, Frida Kahlo predicted she would marry Diego Rivera when she started at National Preparatory School. Frida Kahlo was also one of the few women who got the chance to attend school at that time.

That same year, she joined a group of students who held similar intellectual and political views. There she fell in love with one of the members of this group, Alejandro Gomez Arias. But unfortunately, they got into a serious car accident.

When she was injured, she was taken to a hospital in Mexico City. She spent a few weeks in the Red Cross Hospital before returning home. Eventually she began painting to pass the time and completed her self-portrait the following year.

In 1928, Frida Kahlo asked Rivera to judge her work. He encouraged her in response. Despite her mother's objections, the two soon got married.
