The story took place in the home of Joe Hawkins and his parents Thelma and Roy. They lived in an area of London called Plairstow, which was the old working-class neighbourhood. The house they lived in was nothing like a palace. It was small, cramped, and in an awful street. Their neighbours were old, dirty-talking, and unintelligent.
Joe Hawkins was a 16-years-old skinhead. He was tall, rather good looking; a boy who could touch every girl’s heart. But again there was something in his eyes that would frighten them. His eyes were filled with brutality and hade.
He wore, like thousand of others of his kind, army trousers, braces and collarless T-shirts. He was especially fond of his boots! They were the most important piece of his outfit. The boots were the real thing; army-disposal.
He was also quite clever. Not in a school way, but in a sneaky way. He uses his brain for street business and not to get an education.
Joe has lived his whole life in this poor neighbourhood of London with his parents. Not as others families, his mother was the one, who was in control, and describes his father as too soft and his mother of being a large woman with a wild temper. This had probably affected him a lot, because the mother had taken over the strong father figure, and Joe could not deal with that, so he hated his father, for not standing up for himself.
