The story takes place in the home of Joe Hawkins and his parents Roy and Thelma. They live in an area called Plairstow in London’s East End, which is one of the old working class neighbourhoods. Their house is described as small and cramped and the street is awfull.

Joe Hawkins is a 16-year-old skinhead, he wears clothes from the army surplus, he is particularly proud of his heavy army-boots and his home made club. He is quite tall and rather good looking and has the appearance of a 19-year old, which he probably takes advantage of. He is also quite intelligent, not in a school like manner, but in a cunning way. He uses his brain to make a living in the streets and not to get an education.

He has lived all his life in one of the poor neighbourhoods of London with his parents. Unlike most other families, his mother has been the one who was in control and he describes his father as being soft and his mother is a large woman with a vile temper. This has probably affected him a lot because his mother has taken the role of the strong father figure, Joe cannot deal with that, he hates his father because he don’t stand up to the mother.
