The short story “The Skirt” takes place in the popular city Manchester in England. The main character Betany is a paralyzed former comedian, who likes to interact with people especially her family.
The story follows a morning where Bethany is getting ready for a shopping trip with her aunt and neighbor. Bethany´s mother dresses her in a skirt, afterward, she eats a healthy breakfast and swallows her pills.
When aunt Joan comes, Bethany goes to her room to change her cloth because she wants to wear a pair of jeans instead. Aunt Joan thinks Bethany is in a bad mood, and Bethany decides to sneak out of the house. She goes through the bus station in her wheelchair. Someone calls her name, but Bethany ignores it. On her way, she remembers a discussion with her doctor about what led to her condition. She couldn´t remember exactly what happened but only that she was drunk and with a guy.
Bethany gets on a bus. She struggles not to start crying. Bethany tries to get in a better mood by reminding herself that her wheelchair is freshly painted. Lastly, Bethany wishes that she one day will get back on stage as a comedian.
