In the movie 8th grade, we follow around this girl called Kayla. We get to know Kayla as the person she is at school and the person she is at home.

Kayla is a part-time YouTuber, and she does not have a lot of friends in the school. She is making YouTube videos to help other kids or teenagers and give them some helping thoughts on topics a teen would experience. Kayla is acting like she knows everything that she is talking about on YouTube when in the reality she does not know anything about the stuff she is saying to YouTube. Kayla’s videos are about how to boost your confidence or get more friends in the school, but she does not know what she is talking about.

In the movie, we see that Kayla lives alone with her father. Kayla’s father is a very supportive father who supports Kayla and is a little overprotective. He wants Kayla to be as happy as possible. When Kayla goes out with her new friends at the mall, we see that her father is following the group that Kayla is talking to. Kayla feels embarrassed and shy because she does not want her new friends to see that she has a father that cares about her.
