The story Indian Camp is all about the experience you get in life, and at some point, how the experience you have been through helps you to grow from a child to an adult. So, the theme in the story is about personal development and growth as a person.
In the story, we can see that Nick and his father have a very special bond with each other. And that Nicks father is a very good father, in the way that he tries to involve Nick, for example in the scene where the woman is giving birth and he tries to explain Nick what is happening. Nick answers that he knows what is happening, but at the same time Nicks father also tries to protect him from the bad things that a child shouldn’t experience. The father is also called the doctor. For example, when he says: “'I'll put some peroxide on that, George,' the doctor said.” So, when Nick is talking to him, then his name is father, but when someone else is talking to him he is called the doctor.
Nick is going through a development personally, where he is starting as a child and ending up being an adult. The scene that shows his development is where he makes a very mature decision, when he looks away when his father is stitching the woman up. "Now," his father said, "there are some stitches to put in. You can watch this or not, Nick, just as you like. I'm going to sew up the incision I made." Nick did not watch. His curiosity had been gone for a long time.
