Segregation in the South For many years black and white people were segregated in the South. The black people were oppressed by the white people. The front seats in the busses were reserved for the white people. The best tables in the restaurants, and the good groceries in the stores were reserved for the white people. Most shops and restaurant did not even aloud black people to enter. There were special seats for the black people in the back of the busses. When they went to a grocery store, they had to stand for hours, waiting for the white people
