The short story “Going Home” by Pete Hamill tells the story of Vingo, a man who was in prison for the past four years. Vingo is a passenger on a bus from New York to Florida, where he encounters a group of young people. His reserved attitude makes them imagine different scenarios about his life.
After a while one of the girls from the group approaches Vingo and tries to find out more about his life. At first, Vingo is reluctant to open to her, almost shy, but he accepts her invitation to join her group at a café. Back in the bus, the girl asks more questions about Vingo, who confesses that he is an ex-convict on his way home. When asked about his wife, Vingo tells the girl that he does not know whether he is still married or not.
When he was in jail, he wrote to his wife, telling her that he understood if she had found a new man. But that he was finally coming home and still wanted to be with her. And if she did not have a new man and still wanted him to come home, she should let him know. And to do so she was supposed to hang a yellow handkerchief in a big tree of their hometown.
