For many people, racism is not a regular thing, but for black people and black people in the U.S. especially, it is something they can call ordinary. Racism is not a new concept, but it is something that still happens today. Millions of black people experience racism in their day-to-day life, whether it is from the media, friends, or the police. The book “THE HATE U GIVE” is a novel by Angie Thomas, published in 2017. The story is about a black girl named Starr Carter, who experiences racism in different ways.
Throughout the book, we hear about how Starr navigates the two settings in which the book takes place. One is the black neighborhood she lives in, Garden Heights. And the other is the primarily white school she attends, Williamson Prep. To make sure that people treat her as normally as possible, Starr never lets anyone at Williamson see her true self. She changes the way she acts, depending on her environment. “Williamson Starr doesn’t use slang - if a rapper would say it, she doesn’t say it, even if her white friends do. Slang makes them cool. Slang makes her “hood.” Williamson Starr holds her tongue when people make her angry so nobody will think she’s the “angry black girl.” … Basically, Williamson Starr doesn’t give anyone a reason to call her ghetto” (pp. 73-74, ll. 25-5). This shows that she has learned how to act to make sure that nobody treats her differently based on her skin color. She is used to navigating her two main settings. One where she acts like herself. And the other is where she acts like another person to make sure that people do not treat her differently than they would if she was white. She also does not want people to call her ghetto or the “angry black girl” because she probably knows that both things have negative connotations, even though they are not necessarily bad things.
