Introduction:

The Hate U Give is a novel written by Angie Thomas, it was published on February 28, 2017, by HarperCollins imprint Balzer + Bray. The length of the book is 444 pages long. The book was a commercial success, debuting at number one on The New York Times young adult best-seller list. Thomas attempts to expand readers' understanding of the Black Lives Matter movement as well as difficulties faced by black Americans. Thomas was born and raised in Jackson Mississippi. When she was only six years old, Thomas witnessed a shootout. The following day, her mother took her to the library to show her that “”there was more to the world than what [Thomas] saw that day,” which inspired her to take up writing. She earned BFA from Belhaven University, a private Christian college in Mississippi. Thomas was the first black student to graduate in creative writing.

Summary

The Hate U Give follows a sixteen-year-old girl, named Starr Carter who lives between two worlds: the poor neighborhood Garden Heights where she was born and raised. Then we have her fancy prep school Williamson Prep, a primarily white school. Starr is black herself, she is trying to balance between these two worlds but the uneasy balance is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed childhood best friend, Khalil by a police officer.
