Police brutality has been a problem the world has witnessed for a period of time. According to The Law Dictionary, the definition of the word police brutality is “the use of excessive force and/or unnecessary force by police officers when dealing with civilians”. A country where this often happens is the United States. There have been many lives that have been lost in the hands of those who are pre supposedly there to help and to protect the innocent and it always causes an outrage from the public. Many of the victims the police brutalize are Africans-Americans. In the history of America, people with African descent have been seen as a lesser human being by white people, to the point where they were stripped of their culture, dehumanized, and enslaved. Even after the African-American community was set free, they still suffered at the hands of the white man. In the novel “The Hate U Give” by author Angie Thomas, we follow the story of a black teenager named Starr Carter and her experience with police brutality and the aftermath of losing a loved one to it. The focus of this analysis will be on a characterization of the main character, the title of the novel, the novel’s use of cultural and intertextual references and the genre and audience.
