The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is about the teenage girl Starr, who lives two different lives, one who takes place in her black, ghetto neighborhood Garden Heights where she can be herself one hundred percent, and the other being at her fancy white private school Williamson where she has to flip the switch, being as invisible as possible. After she witness her best friend Khalil who is getting killed, she tries to find her voice so that she can stand up for him and for all the other black people who are still getting treated with hate and injustice. After a long fight and a lot of thinking, Starr decides to stand up for her community and use her voice to make a difference.

“It's dope to be black until it's hard to be black.”

The lead character, Starr, is through the book struggling to find her inner voice and is afraid to show who “garden heights” she really is, when she is in school.

"That means flipping the switch in my brain so I’m Williamson Starr." (“We need to talk about ‘The Hate U Give’ (T.H.U.G.)”) Williamson Starr doesn´t use slang-if a rapper would say it, even if her white friends do”
